Small Home Renovations with a Big Impact

We talk quite a bit about major renovations in your kitchen and bathroom. Today, however, we’re shining a spotlight on small home renovations with a big impact. Small renovations are perfect for homeowners who want to update their homes without the time and cost of a big renovation or remodel.

Kitchen Updates

You don’t have to install all new cabinets and countertops to update your kitchen, although new countertops are on our list of small renovations that make a big impact on your kitchen. While you’re considering new countertops, add a new backsplash to the equation. You can also update your kitchen simply by changing the hardware on your cabinets and drawers and by updating your faucets, appliances, and lighting. Check out these kitchen hardware updates for ideas by top Houzz designers.

Living Room Updates

Of course, you can always update your living room with new furniture and accents or even a fresh coat of paint. But if you want to make a lasting impact on your living room, look to the focal point of your room. Fireplaces are often the focal point and you can completely change the look of your living room by updating your fireplace. Try refreshing the fireplace surround with new tile that can be placed over your current surround. If the wall space around your fireplace is a bit lacking consider adding bookshelves and storage cabinets to border the fireplace. Or, if you have the opposite problem--outdated shelving and cabinets-- consider ripping them out and creating new nook spaces as seen in this fireplace redesigned by a Houzz expert designer.

As you can see, the designer tore out the outdated cabinets and redesigned the space by turning the new nooks into a mini art gallery. Smartly, the designer also kept the lower cabinets and revamped them with a fresh coat of paint, new hardware, and countertops.

Bathrooms

Maybe you’re not ready to gut and remodel your bathroom but you have been dreaming of updating your vanity and sink. That’s the perfect small renovation that will make a huge impact on any bathroom of the home. Though you can go for a pre-fab vanity from a big box home improvement store, we encourage you to think about a custom-built vanity instead. Custom-designed cabinets are unique and made to fit your needs. With a custom vanity, you can include organized storage in your design. Don’t forget to consider adding wall shelving for additional storage. And much like with the kitchen, fresh lighting and new faucets on the sink and in your shower or tub quickly update your space. Entryway

One of our favorite ways to upgrade your entryway is by turning it into a mudroom with custom-designed storage that’s meant to hide your family’s day-to-day clutter like cold-weather gear. Here are some of our favorite mudrooms we’ve created over the years.

Laundry Room

Let’s face it--we all spend more time in the laundry room than we’d like. But you can learn to love your laundry room by adding much-needed storage space with new cabinets and/or shelves. If you have the space, you can also add a countertop for easy folding and sorting. Get inspired from these laundry rooms we recently designed.
