Pantone's 2018 Fall Color Trends

In February, Pantone released it’s Fall Color Trend Report for 2018. The first thing we noticed about this year’s fall shades is that they’re not much different from the colorful spring shades we’re seeing this season. Jewel tones dominate the Top 10 Color Palette, including 2018 Color of the Year Ultra Violet, while the Classic Neutrals Palette introduces updated shades of navy, off white, beige, brown, and gray. This year’s picks indicate that trendsetters are looking for a more seamless transition between the warm and cold months and are choosing shades that carry over well from season to season. That’s great news for homeowners who want to stay on trend throughout the year without having to make major changes to their decor each season to keep up. Without further adieu, take a look at 2018’s favorite shades of fall.

Purple Reigns

Ultra Violet is Pantone’s Color of the Year for good reason--some people like pink, others like blue, but everyone likes purple. Well, at least some shade of purple. Purple has long been the color of royalty and it’s no wonder why. Purple exudes confidence and boldness, and it looks good on just about everyone and everything it covers. Ultra Violet’s lighter shade, Crocus Petal, is more subtle but every bit as empowering.

Emerald & Sapphire

Pantone’s fall blue and green shades give nod to sapphire and emerald jewel tones. Nebulas Blue is a starry, bright blue shade that pairs well with Quetzal Green, an elegant emerald green.

Lemon and Tangerine

If jewels are nature’s inspiration for 2018’s hottest colors, lemons and oranges must the choice snack of today’s trendsetters if judged by Pantone’s top color picks. Russet Orange adds warmth to the fall color palette while Ceylon Yellow adds a spicy touch, and Limelight shines as the season’s yellow-green shade.

Garnet and Ruby

In continuing with the jewel tone trend, January and July birthstones, garnet and ruby, are the clear inspiration for fall’s red shades. Red pear, a deep, dark red reminiscent of the garnet stone lies somewhere between maroon and crimson, while Valiant Poppy is a ruby red and brings to mind Prince’s “Raspberry Beret” every time we look at it.

Olive

Pantone’s Martini Olive is somewhere between green, brown, and yellow, and holds its own as a break in the jewel tone shades that otherwise rule the fall.

Neutrally Speaking

Pantone balances the bold jewel tones of 2018 with quiet but warm shades of brown, beige, white, gray, and navy. Meerkat is a fun, spicy brown that reminds us of falling leaves and apple cider that pairs well with Sargasso Sea, Pantone’s fall navy tone. Tofu, Almond Buff, and Quiet Gray are all understated, soft shades of white, beige, and gray--everyone’s favorite neutrals.
