The Latest Backsplash Trend is Actually a Timeless Classic

For the last several years, subway tile has been the go-to tile for backsplash in both the kitchen and the bathroom. But just as we were sure we couldn’t possibly look at another gleaming white subway tile, a new backsplash trend emerged and a more obscure classic tile material has finally taken its place in the sun. We’re talking about zellige tile (pronounced zelley-guh), a tile made from terra cotta that comes in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors.

Why We (and Other Design Professionals) Love It

As we just mentioned, zellige tile comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors kind of like subway tile. But unlike subway tile, which appeals to modernists thanks to its clean, sharp lines, zellige tile is appealing because of its imperfections. Instead of the smooth feel of the subway tile, zellige tile is rougher with unexpected lumps and grooves. Zellige tile appeals to just about all types of spaces and design styles. Traditionalists can add a twist to their style while boho and eclectic style lovers will appreciate the unique qualities of zellige tile.

Our Favorite Zellige Tile Design Ideas

Some of our favorite backsplash designs can be accomplished with zellige tile. Color block is one of those many designs we fell in love with on Fixer Upper. Chip and Joanna showed us how to take two different colored zellige tiles and turn them into a color block backsplash for the bathtub or shower. Adding a twist to traditional white monochrome style using a white zellige tile is another design idea we fell in love with the moment we saw it. We’re also a fan of zellige tile herringbone and knockout pattern designs using multiple colors.
